HELP! '95 gun-sails: CBS-TUBE

Post by Stan Kuunde » Wed, 08 Feb 1995 20:34:12

Hello, i bought this year in Germany (das boot) a new gun sial( slalom race).
I have some problems with the new system: CBS-tube.
If you turn to the right the tension wil decrease and turn to the left to
increase tension. It says also that you may only do 5 turns.
My question:
if you first turn to the right (to decrease tension), at a point it is not
possible to decrease more. Does Gun mean that you do 5 turns to the left
(increase tension) from that point ?
I hope you understand what i mean...
Hangloose
Stan

I have an idea what you mean so here is my suggestion. There are a few makers
that are using similar systems. For example UP uses a similar tensioning system
for their sail battens. They will all tell you how much to turn the "dial" for
optimum tension. However, much like recommended fin sizes for certain boards
the conditions and sailor preference will determine the final choice. Use these
recommendations as starting points.

I tend to look for wrinkles on the battens to help me determine when to stop
tightening. I also consider how much "pop" I want out of my cambers for cambered
battens. I try to eliminate as many wrinkles as I can from the batten pockets.
I try to give my cambers enough slack to rotate ("pop") to my liking.

You may want to keep track how many turns it takes to smooth out the wrinkles.
As the time passes you can use this to help you determine how the sail is
changing. The older the sail gets the more turns you may need. This may help you
determine when its time to s***the sail.

Hope this helps.
