Anyone have any ideas on  choice of a 7 metre sail for a 277 freeride
,MY choice is  between Gaastra  4 X ,3X or a north pyro.Early planing
is more important than top end .

The two sails you mentioned are very good, but there's another I'd
consider - the Neil Pryde V8 - it has very good bottom end.... but in high
winds all you have to do is downhaul it like crazy to flatten it out...
even outhaul it a fair bit too - and you have a very fast sail.

I sailed the Gaastra 2x 7m and loved it so I would guess that the 3x and
4x are equally (probably better for what you want) good.

Whats the biggest size sail that poeple sail on their 270ish board? I
have a Vivace 270 which is about 96 litres and my biggest sail is
currently a 6.5 but I was thinking of getting a 7m for those twitchy
days. Anybody tried anything that big on something that small??

cheers

Depends on your weight and conditions.  Have sailed as much as a 7.5 on a
Bic Tempo (265/ 95 liters).  I weigh 145 lbs.  If the wind is consistent
(so you are waterstarting and not uphauling too much) and you are smaller,
its not too difficult.  You may want to think about a larger fin since
you'll probably be using the larger sail in lighter winds and will
probably need the extra lift.

Best Regards,
William

Double that fin thing - didn't realize the importance of a good fin - I
swear by the True Ames Light Air Pointer - have owned a couple of them
now and love them for big sails (6.5 -7.5).  Makes the difference
between having a great day and slogging all day, really.

I suppose there are other factors ie. technique, etc but the right fin
seems to make the biggest, most noticable impact for me - I'm a bigger
guy, 230lbs.  You can e-mail any of the fin mfg's and ask their advice
for your particular setup.  Gotta love e-mail....

Great sailing!

To see a real difference from the 6.5 i'd even get something around
7.5 - 7.8. There should be no major trim problem but i'd make
sure that i can uphaul the beast: The light winds frequently tend
to drop to even lighter (read slogging) and if the board sinks
it doesn't plan that easy anyway.

Personally i'll stay with a 6.5 and 95 l as largest board --
if i don;t get going with that it's not that great anyway.

I use a 7.3 M sail with my HiPer Tech 275.  It is a little hard to "get
going" but when it does, it really flys.  This sail is really best on the
AHD 297 but when I begin to come out of the water on the 297 with the 7.3
I go down to the smaller board.

Im also owning the 270 Bic Vivace and the biggest Im surfing is 6.8 NP VX,
works good but in my opinion bigger is too big ( too heavy and too big for
this 96 Liter board ) I weight 81 kg

Nic
I've gone for the 3x but have to wait for a week for delivery!!I'll
let you know how i get on.I demoed a 6.8 tommahawk last sunday in iffy
winds on a ahd 277 free ,about 100 litres and the sail size was no
problem at all.I weigh about 75 kg,had a 36 cm pointer and it worked
well but i didn,t really like the sail-heavy and clunky
rotation-probably had the wrong mast.Several guys here at Rutland have
7 m on 275s although the majority have  280 or 285 as there early
planing board.

Nic, I use my Gaastra 2x 7m sail with my F2 277 RIDE and with my 40cm fin
is superb (it overpowers though in force 5+ quite easily- probably due to
large fin size).
