hi, i'm travelling to aus and new zealand in mid-february with my dad and
his girlfriend. i'm an avid windsurfer from san francisco. i wonder if
i'll be able to sail in australia and new zealand in february.
specifically, we'll spend a few days in each of the following spots:
sydney, hayman island, auckland and milford sound. i wonder if there is
good shortboarding in any of these places and if so, can one hire
equipment at the water and launch from the rental facilities. if so,
where and are there any "centers", e.g. a Bic, F2... center which hosts
and rents fine equipment, not just a hodge-podge of junky left over
equipment.

Paul check out http://www.winzurf.co.nz for info on New Zealand.
Sailing in Milford Sound will be very difficult (it is a fiord with
steep valley walls), Auckland is okay, but there are plenty of better
sites - check the Web site.

Paul,

I can only speak for Sydney but here are some of the details,

There are a number of good shortborad spots where you can hire gear
and sail. Are you interested in flat water or waves?

Unfortunately, February is not a great time for good winds, there may
be some strong NE winds late in the afternoon during that time or
approx once a week a strong southerly wind will blow for a couple of
hours.
