1000 windsurfing spots on thewindmap.com

Post by Anthon » Tue, 03 Apr 2007 00:43:46

http://thewindmap.com has just made it to 1000 windsurfing locations
listed, and about 600 with descriptions (from the very long to the very
short!).  Quite a few rec dot windsurfers have added information, so if
that's you, thanks!

If you have a few minutes sometime to update, correct or add info on
sites you've sailed, or maybe upload a photo it'll help keep the info up
to date for everyone.

Thanks,

Anthony

1000 windsurfing spots on thewindmap.com

Post by Bill » Tue, 03 Apr 2007 22:45:54

Hello Anthony,

I enjoy the Windmap, have submitted content, find it a valuable
windsurfing resource, and have it linked in OBX Beach Life.

I was wondering about a navigation issue while surfing the site.  When
viewing "Site Information" for a particular location, I had trouble
finding my way back to the main map which displays all the various
site icons.  I found the "World Map" link in the top nav bar and
discovered that it will take me out to where I need to go; however, I
was unsure it would do that before clicking it.  Seeing "World Map," I
originally thought it would take me out to the big picture view of the
entire globe rather than remaining in the region I was viewing
locations in.  Perhaps the link only needs to be renamed to something
like:  "Locations Map" to signify that that link will display all the
location icons again and take me out of the "Site Information" view.
Just a little UI critique.  Other that that, great site and
information resource!

Thanks Bill,  I've changed it to "view on main map" which should be a
little more intuitive.  Thanks for your writeups on the site!

Call me stupid, but how is that site working?
Can't you just zoom on say the bay area and see the spots there?
I understand you can search spots by name but do you get to see spots in
a particular region?

Hi Tibi,

To see the spots in the bay you click the red marker that's over north
america, and click on "zoom".  That'll show you all the US spots.  Then
do the same on the red marker in SF and you're there.

I'm well aware it's not ideal, but there are some issues with the Google
Maps stuff and lots and lots of markers - loading them all up at the
start for instance would take forever...  If things change I'll try and
make it possible to see any spot in a click on two.

Hmm for some reason I see only the top level markers: after clicking
zoom on the US marker, the map zooms on the US but no other marker appear.

Anyway, if you're interested we (fr.rec.sport.voile.planche) have a kmz
of french windsurf spots available that you could import. Comments are
in french though ;-)

Great idea Anthony.  However, I am getting errors when trying to view/update
pages in IE versions 6 and 7.  Mostly null object errors - javascript?

Thanks for spotting that, should be fixed now.

I don't see any red markers? I'm using IE with javascript and activeX scripting
enabled.
