Windsurfing in Raleigh, NC?

Post by Jill Warv » Thu, 01 Dec 1994 01:40:39

A friend of mine is considering taking a job offer in Raleigh, NC, but before he makes
his decision, he wants to know more about sailing in the Raleigh area.  Obviously,
Hatteras is the place to be, but it sounds like a bit of a long drive for a weekend trips.
Are there other good coastal sailing sites that are a bit closer?  And what about sailing
on lakes and reservoirs in the Raleigh area, for those after work sailing sessions during
the week?

Thanks!

- Jill

p.s.  25-30 knots all day yesterday here in Indy!  Fun, fun, fun!!

Sailing in Raleigh?  Why this place is almost the closest the east coast
comes to windsurfing Heaven!! (Although you could get closer if Hatteras
wasn't 4-5 hours away)

The Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) is one of the top 10 places to
live in the country (Money Magazine 1994) and is number one for business
(Fourtune 1994).

The best place to sail within 45 minutes is Jordan Lake which has several
access points with great parking (State Parks: $3 during summer) and huge
rigging areas  with friendly windsurfers almost any good sailing day. (not
overcrowded) Best wind SW to NW.

There are several other areas like Falls Lake (lots of parks some no gas
engine areas), Crabtree Lake, Lake Wheeler, Lake Gaston (1.5 hrs).

The icing on the cake that makes this place HOT is being within road trip
distance to Hatteras and even closer to several other ocean and protected
sound sites on the Atlantic coast (1.5 to 2.5 hours).  Of course, Hatteras
is famous for always blowin, but there are some close rivals (i.e. Emerald
Isle) where you can rent a nice cottage ON THE WATER or sail from Island
Rigs (small fee) with warm showers and cool boardheads. ***a Beach and
Tidewater ***ia (4 hrs) also has some nice sites ocean, sound and
bay.

Check the new issue of Winsurfing Magazine (where my "friend" KW works)
for email addresses of the NCSU windsurfing club sponsor and the Triangle
Area Boardsailers Association (name?).  Also, you can try to call Island
Rigs, Emerald Isle.

Mach 10 and Windy Too.

I live in this area, and that post seems way too favorable to me.  I've
been here for two years and have never bothered to sail because it
made more sense to go to the Gorge for the summer instead.
However I don't have figures, because I never sail.

I can say that San Franciso area is much better.

Now you've gone and told the secret to everyone.
Next thing you know, all those boardheads from the SF Bay area will be
relocating here. :^)
