WINDSURFING MAIL LIST ANNOUNCEMENTS

WINDSURFING MAIL LIST ANNOUNCEMENTS

Post by Gary Blumenste » Thu, 11 Nov 1993 03:13:13

   ===================================================================
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS TO ALL WINDSURFING MAIL LIST SUBSCRIBERS!
   ===================================================================

CHANGE OF LIST ADDRESS STARTING ON DECEMBER  1, 1993:
         -----------------------------------------------------

WILL BE CHANGED TO THE FOLLOWING:

To prevent submissions from getting lost after Dec 1st, I will provide a
forwarding alias at the old address.  I do not expect any disruption of
mail service during the transition, but I would ask everyone to please
begin using the new address immediatly following the cutover date.

                  AUTOMATED LIST REQUEST SERVER:
                  ------------------------------

Yes, it's time for the windsurfing list to enter the 20th century!
Since it's been hard to keep up with the number of new subscriptions
lately, new software will provide automated list request services.

After December 1st, the list server will handle all requests for new
subscritions and unsubscribes.  In addition, help files will be
retrievable as well.  To make requests, the list server will accept
commands imbedded in the body of mail messages sent to

to the list before and following the cutover date.

Although I'm aware that some people gripe about list servers in
general, I plan to stay on top of things and provide human
intervention where needed.  I don't want this list become a "black
hole" on the Internet, like so many others have become (like this
one was at one time).  The list is now in a growth phase, and the
time is right to utilize new tools to foster and improve our means
 of communication, not hinder it.

                           ARCHIVE SERVER:
                           ---------------

Following the December 1st cutover, the windsurfing mail list will
provide an archive server containing all article submissions from
December 1st on.  The archive server will provide a means for
subscribers to retrive, list, and perform key-word searches to find
previously submitted articles containing desired information.  More
help on this feature will be posted to the list following the December
 1st conversion.

                            FUTURE WORK:
                            ------------

A limited Usenet-to-Email gateway is planned in the near future.  As a
service, I will be forwarding Usenet articles posted to rec.windsurfing
to any windsurfing mail list subscriber who requests this.  Following this,
a limited email-to-News gateway is planned that will post articles
submitted by list subscribers who do not have access to Netnews.  It will
be designed in such a way as to not take up bandwith on both forums.

                            OTHER STUFF:
                            ------------

I have some other ideas in the works that are unfortunatley still a
little too early to discuss.  However, I wanted to make a point by
mentioning this; that we can all look forward to even better
communications as our mailing list and the networks at large expand and
 evolve.

 Great sailing everyone!
