My Baja Trip

My Baja Trip

Well, i just got back from a week long trip to Baja.  A bunch of us
went to Punta San Carlos about 40 miles south of El Rosariao (sp).
We took a 28' motorhome and only got stuck once :-) .  We had wind
5 out of the 6 days and the only sail i had rigged was a 5.0 . However
i could have used the 4.3 on 2 of the days and been _much_ more in
control.  I sailed my AHD 83 ( 8'1/2" ) board all but one day, with
other people on 8'9" to 8'3" boards ( with TonyDuck on his 7'10" for
awhile ).

Now, of course i had visions of 'southern' baja in my mind when i left
and i brought an awning, hammock, lots of stuff like that.  Well in
reality there isn't any sand and it was cold ( full wetsuits ).  So
if you go be prepared.  it's suppost to blow from march till october
so thats good news if i can't make it to the gorge this summer.

Now to get the hi-per tech back together for the mohave speed crossing
in 2 weeks...

I'm always confused over El Rosario, Santa Rosaria, and other
similarly named places. Is Punta San Carlos on the Pacific
side, south of the turnoff to Bahia De Los Angeles?, or
is it on the Sea of Cortez side near Mulege and Punta
        Chivato?

I've always wondered where the decent spots are in Baja, but
have never had the time to explore every dirt road, and the
magazines just act coy about 'secret' spots (As if everyone
will suddenly rush to Baja and crowd the place up)

I went there last year at the end of March. Certainly is
desolate. Don't even recall seeing a cactus. The wind and waves
were good, 4.5-5.0 everyday.

I had a chance to sail the AHD 83 while in Corpus Christi last
month. The board was a lot of fun. It was like riding on a small
rocket ship. Seemed to me as though it was difficult to jibe in
the chop. You really had to concentrate and couldn't race into a
water ski show off jibe. On the two boards that I examined there
were small cracks around the fin boxes leading me to wonder about
the construction. I read in Windrider that the board was retailing
for about $800, although I haven't been able to confirm this, which
would give it a good fun to dollars ratio. Anybody care to comment
on this board?
