North '92 Infinity vs. Idra

Post by Brad Hemming » Sun, 03 May 1992 02:10:58

It looks like I'm going to, or my credit card is going to, buy either a
North '92 Infinity 7.2 or Idra 7.2 sail new.  There is an $80 difference in
cost to me (Infinity is more).  Anyone care to comment or give
recommendations between these two?

I'm an intermediate sailor (waterstart fine, but only just starting to hit
jibes) who spends most of his limited windsurfing time on the North Carolina
coast on the sound sides of Emerald Island or Cape Hatteras (i.e. no waves,
moderate chop in stronger winds).  My board is a HiFly slalom board (9'
something inches, probably around 130l displacement).  I now have a 4.3 '91
Infinity (thanks Tom Albertz :-), a '91 5.0 Idra, 5.9 and 6.4 Hifly Racetec
(?) sails, and hopefully soon a 7.2 Infinity/Idra for those suboptimal days.

I believe the Infinity has cambers while Idra does not ? For that size go
for the one with the most cambers, you want all the power you can get.

No, the Idra also has a single removable camber. The Idra is a low cost
version of the Infinity. It has two battens less, so it's easier to rig
and a little cheaper.

Still, you are absolutely right. As I wrote earlier, cambers only help
in large sail sizes and 7.2 is certainly large enough to warrant more
than one camber inducer.

Brad, get a Prisma.

The 7.2 infinity may warrent more, but its very stable in overpowering
conditions as it is. I'm very happy with mine.
