Anybody heard of "West Wind" boards?

Post by Todd Waite (L » Thu, 16 Jun 1994 23:52:49

I am looking for a shorter board.  I looked at a 1992 West Wind v-90 or
v-60,  It's a 9' 18lb high wind epoxy board and it's hollow.  I have
never heard of "West Wind".  I hear it is now out of business.

Has anyone ever heard anything good or bad about this company?

Please let me know.

West Wind made some pretty good boards in the late 80s and early 90s,
they kept switching their base of operations between Houston, TX and
Corpus Christi, TX.

All in all they made pretty good boards.

I think you were talking about the vr90. vr stands for vertical rail.
I've never ridden one but I hear that the vr90 is a handful in chop, but
absolutely screams in flat water.  It also sails like a board bigger than
a 9.0

As far as construction I don't remember West Wind making any hollow boards,
they made boards with a honecomb construction so that they didn't have
foam in them.

West Wind boards either seem to last forever or give up the ghost in a matter
of days, it all depended on whether the honcombs were closed or open on the
rails of your particular board.

I heard they leak.  Think I saw it in a short Windsurfing article also.
Turns your 18 pounder into a 36 pounder, but I understand you just
come in and drain it out (through the drain plug) and you're 18
lbs again.
