NBA Learn to Sail Free Day, July 9

LEARN TO WINDSURF FREE

NEWBURYPORt -- Touted as "one of the most successful free
instructional windsurf events in the country" by a former
USWA director, the Newburyport Boardsailing Association (NBA)
in Newburyport, Mass., will hold their 6th Annual Learn to
Windsurf Free Day on Saturday, July 9, at Newburyport's
Water Stree Seawall.

Co-sponsored by NH Hobie Cat & Windsuring of Seabrook,
NH, and led by EmCee (Derek) Escher, the event has enabled 342
novices to get their feet wet for free: 37 last year (in 99
degree heat), 54 in 1992, 75 in 1991, 111 in 1990, and 65
the year before that!

The program walks each participant through a progressive series of on-land
mini-clinics, followed by hands-on practice on a dry-land simulator,
and ending with a private one-on-one lesson aboard a forgiving,
beginner board.

Although some duties were assigned at the last NBA meeting,
all NBAers are encouraged to participate in this rewarding experi
ence. Just show up at 10 a.m. Those who help out will be rewarded with
ample food and drink at a private party to be held afterwards
at a secret location. There are numerous small tasks you can help
with, everything from selling t-shirts, helping to work the
registration table from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., teaching up-hauling, etc.

The NBA, now in its 9th year with more than 175 members, is a
non-profit organization formed by local boardsailors to promote safe
boardsailing and preserve access rights in the Greater Newburyport
area.
Participants should bring adequate footgear, such as sneakers or
beach/sailing shoes. Those age 17 or under must be accompanied by a
parent or guardian. The rain date is Sunday, July 10. For more
