making new sails out of older sails

making new sails out of older sails

We (my buddies and I) have several old sails that are not really worth reselling,
so we are thinking of salvaging them into smaller sails.  For instance, I have
an old (but hardly used) Fanatic 5.6 and I would like to have some sailmaker make
the neccesary changes to make it a 4.0.  Has anyone out there ever done this or at
least went through the process to find out the advan/disadvan.?  Is it worth it?
Quite frankly, I would only use the sail 4-8 times per year, and I have yet to justify
spending $400 on a nice 4.0 for those days.   However, I am sure a sailmakers time
is not cheap, so perhaps it's a wash.  Any help would be cool.
