I wear extended wear contacts all the time,  Just make sure you close your
eyes, (which is usually automatic) before you hit the water.  The goal in
windsurfing is stay on the board but fall we must from time to time.  I can
open my eyes alittle bit in the water but not for long or I will loose
them.  All that said I wouldn't sail any other way.   I also scuba with
them in but at least I have a mask on.

Good Luck   &   O-O See Ya!

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions - seems like some form of soft
contacts will be fine - disposables seem best.

Pray for wind or waves, or even both...

I use dispsoable contacts, and they work great.  I wear goggles (Spex) over
them to help protect my eyes from the sun and also to help prevent the contacts
from coming out.  I have lost a few contacts, but not in a while.  And since
they are disposable, it is only a few $$$.

My husband often windsurfs with prescription sunglasses.  With a leash and his
helmet on, he has not lost a pair of glasses yet!

I have to say, I do think it is VERY important to wear UV sunglasses when
sailing - the glare off the water can do a lot of damage to your eyes.  And, if
you cut the glare you can read the water better, so you know when that big gust
is going to hit you.

i think reneu makes a uv protection series of lenses for a little more that i
recomend. it cuts down on the glare.

I don't know about you guys, but I have enough trouble getting eye drops in my
eyes on dry land, much less out on the water with chop and wind. The eye drops
are a good idea - but you can probably wait until you get on shore.

I also wear contacts while windsurfing.  Have not lost any yet, even when
opening eyes underwater for brief glimpses of how to get out from under my
7.5M!  (I think squinting makes it unlikely to lose any with the large soft
lenses)  I did lose a lense when lap swimming once, when my goggles slipped out
of my hands while I was adjusting them,  and they whacked me in the eye!

Jonathan:
I wear "daily wear"  high moisture content soft contacts, and I've had no
problems with them at all. Used to wear torics, no problem there either.
As the others have stated salt water is alot easier on your eyes/contacts
than fresh water, but I've done a ton of saling in both and the only real
difference is my eyes/contacts tend to dry out/get uncomfortable in fresh
water. Hot dry spots like Lake Isabella/Lake Perris/Lake Hodges/and
Klondike lake plus the high Sierra lakes have given me the most problems,
but a couple drops of rewetting solution every couple of hours takes care
of it! I wear cheap sunglasses over them and I've lost a few pairs of
those.
Think I'm going to try some BARZ from Murray's for this summer. They are
like goggles, hi UV protection, and they float!

2 pairs popped out.

is this the "contact factor" in rating wipeouts?

I've been both sailing and surfing wearing soft disposables (I now use
daily disposables - if you do lose one they're real cheap).

I've only lost lenses twice: once coming out of the water the thing just
sprang out, haven't a clue. And the other time was skiing, bombing down
a steep red and the lense decides to just crawl out of my eye. I'm
virtually blind in one eye so when this happened I was effectively
unable to see doing some massive speed downhill - scary buzz.

Go for the daily disposables gets my vote. And as a specs wearer, would
goggles be that difficult to take.

Most contact lenses stay in as long as your eyes stay closed underwater,
which is a little difficult. One-day disposables are probably the best,
as they don't cost much to replace, but I just make do with a decent
glasses strap, but make sure the lenses are secure - I only made that
mistake once!
