FAQ suggestions

Post by Russell Malmbe » Wed, 08 Jan 1992 22:06:55

I would like to second a suggestion that one of the more
experienced types create a FAQ monthly posting.

As a first year windsurfer, my suggestions for inclusion are:

1.  Rules of sailing
2.  Safety tips -
what to bring with you (extra lines, tools, etc.)
3.  Travel log -
information on popular spots (sites, stores, etc.)
(Kirk Lindstrom has a nice file on SF bay, for example)
4.  Equipment suggestions
beinnginners like advice on boards, sails, wetsuits etc.
5.  Reading list
    Zen & Windsurfing
    Sailing theory books
    etc.

There are several files of interest to readers of this group available by
anonymous ftp from bears.ucsb.edu (128.111.56.56). The directory is
/pub/windsurf. The files are:

The date on this one is 10/17/91, Is there a newer one, Kirk?

wind-numbers    A compilation of wind report telephone numbers for all areas.
                Please send additions.

pictures        Subdirectory of windsurf pictures/art, Most of these

Juri, did you get your scanner?

Within a few days I'll add a file on weather data sources on the Internet.

It would be great if someone could summarize the consensus of the recent
thread.

There was a thread a while ago on Baja, and someone implied that they
were compiling info. If you have such a compilation (not just on Baja),
then please send it to me.

I would be more than happy to make available any contributions from the
net, and make a monthly posting on the files available. Consider this the
first.

Seems like a good idea.  I'd volunteer as librarian (not writer), but I
think item 3 will be so large as to need an anon-ftp site to reside in.
I can't make one (company policy), so.... any other volunteers?

That is the latest.  ASD is supposed to be opening a retail outlet within
walking distance of the beach at Coyote Pt.  I'll update the list and post it
when I get more information.  (ASD has signed a lease and will sell all sorts
of equipment as well as their boards from the outlet.  They were finding it
difficult to build boards with all the people, like me, dropping in to chat
at their 'factory').

Could you post this one?

Kirk out

BTW Day One of 1992 sailing yesterday at Coyote Pt.  I sailed my 6.1 / ASD
9'3" in dead on shore wind that wass VERY cold for 55 minutes before the
wind gave out (There was snow on the mtn peaks!)  I think I'll try the Playtex
glove idea next time.

Some friends sailed Pillar Pt Sat in relatively warm wind on 4.0-4.7's.  Too
bad I was catching up on chores from too much summer sailing.

Windsurfing Hawaii is selling neoprene mittens with the palms cut out.
I have a pair, but I have not gotten to the water yet.  A friend of
mine got them at Windsurf Warehouse by SFO.

I have a pair of these. The work pretty well, as long as you minimize your
time in the water. One problem I have with other gloves is that they make
it difficult to get a grip on your boom. If you combine the added effort
of holding-on to your boom with the loss of *** circulation to your hands
caused by the way a drysuit seals at your wrists, you get very tired hands
and forearms in a short amount of time.
The way I typically wear the gloves with cutout palms is to leave my thumb
in the glove and let my fingers hang out through the "cutout". This causes the
gloves to lie across the back of my hands and that keeps them reasonably warm.
Unfortunately, I still consider myself "in the market" for the ultimate
gloves and boots for windsurfing.
