Multi-Sail (two sails in one) recommendation ?

Post by Alain Dumes » Tue, 01 Sep 1992 06:29:41

I have seen in the back of Windsurfing magazine (in the equipment
marketplace section) a company advertise some new sails called
Multi-Sail.  Those sails have a zipper at the bottomn of the sail which
lets you reduce the sail by a full size, so one sail is equivalent to 2
regular sails. Those mono-film sails have 3 cams and seem really nice. I
really like the idea, the convenience when you need to change sizes and the
reduced cost (need to buy 1/2 as many sails).

As anybofy bought any of those sails ?
Would you recommend them ?

I've been very happy with the two Multi-Sails that I bought in the spring of
1990.  They are the 1989 "Series II" model with 3 external cambers.  The sizes
are 7.2/6.4 and 5.7/5.0 square meters.  I checked my records and found that to
date I have used the 7.2/6.4 on 158 different days and the 5.7/5.0 on 186 days.
Virtually all of this use was in fresh water (7.2/6.4: 99% fresh water;
5.7/5.0: 94% fresh water).

The only "problems" that I've had is the batten on the top camber has worn out
on both of the sails after approximately 140 days of use, and the monofilm has
got quite stained with mineral deposits and/or scratches so that lately I've
had difficulty seeing through them.  Other than these minor troubles, they
still hold their shape as well as when they were new.

As far as their performance is concerned, they are very fast and easy to
control.  I've had no trouble keeping up with (or even passing) friends
sailing top-of-the-line Neil Prydes and Norths.

Multi-Sail (two sails in one) recommendation ?

A well known windsurfer looked at a Multisail during a rigging clinic and
noticed how full the top of the sail was. He concluded that it would be
difficult to control in gusty and high wind conditions, compared to the
new generation of loose-leach sails which twist off when they get overpowered.

What I'd really like is a sail that can be reefed (or somehow reduced)
without getting out of the water.  Is anybody working on that?  --Luigi

There was a prototype at UK wind and surf show last April. Some guy
had rigged up a very complicated series of pulleys so that with just a
pull on a rope a fairly large area above the leach could be pulled
in/taken out. I think it made about 0.7m2 difference. A nice piece of
Heath Robinsonism, but not to be taken too seriously. I think "Boards"
magazine gave it a mini-test a while back, but can't remember what
they said.

I just ordered a Multi-Sail a few days ago, so I gave them a call and
asked them about this.  They said the sails are loose-leach
pre-twisted, and have been so since 1989.  He thought the problem
might have been that they rigged the sail wrong at the clinic (wrong
mast or too much outhaul), he had heard reports of similar problems at
other rigging clinics.

Yep. The brochure they send me mentioned that the sails were loose-leach
and pre-twisted. One things they didn't mention was whether they require
flex top, or constant curve masts, and what kind of mast. Seems that for
high performance sails (what they claim), the mast type should be very
important.

I also thought that $399 per sail was kind of expensive, considering they
were not brand names and were sold throught mail order (which is more of a
pain than buying it down at your favorite store, especially if something
goes wrong with it). Ok, so it is more like $199 per sail, since you get 2
sails out of them. Still, $399 seems relatively expensive...
