I was in a shop the other day that carries waterskiing equipment and
saw some O'Neill lifevests made for waterskiiers that looked like they
might be pretty comfortable. They were "class III" rated, I think.
Is that the class required when a vest is required (oh, you know what
I mean!)? Has anyone tried one of these? Any other vest
recommendations?

Two comfortable vests to wear are Zeiner and Gorge Gear. Waterskiing
vests and standard pfd's are a bit bulky and not necessary to keep
you floating with a wetsuit on. The Zeiner vest is comfortable but
has only a small pocket. Gorge Gear's vest is a bit stiffer, but it
has a large pocket for carrying other important safety gear.
