Raw Sewage In Lakes Bay

Raw Sewage In Lakes Bay

Has anybody discovered the source of the (very) strong odor of
raw sewage that permeated the Lakes Bay/Hampton Inn area last
Saturday.

It seemed unanimous that it wasn't the usual "Eau deLakes Bay".

Pete,
That smell is NOT new!  It's always been there.  Especially to the east
of the launch at the Hampton.  I've been calling it "Poops Bay" for
years.  Why do you think I go to Trixies when it's not happening on the
0cean?  I don't have a poop fin!

In years past Atlantic City dumped their raw sewage in Lakes Bay.
Probably just some of that shit seeping up through the mud!!

I sailed there once a couple years ago -- and it smelled like shit then,
especially east of the Hampton in.  The place was totally unimpressive,
ie, flat and dirty - but it was 5.0.

I've got to believe it's unlikely that raw sewage is being pumped into
Lakes Bay now. Jersey has some of the toughest environmental laws in the
nation, and those laws have made a big difference in the past two decades
in water quality and in many other ways.

Could the bottom muck contain leftovers? I guess, but I'm no expert. Maybe
it's possible that what people are smelling is naturally occuring gas
produced by the decomposition of swamp grass and other organic materials -
or, maybe,  the decomposition of Jimmy Hoffa's body. Maybe we found all
those missing Wise Guys.

Pat, you're just trying to whitewash this whole thing!!  When I  first
sailed there with Dave Adler in '88 there were big signs about not eating
the shellfish in that area. Dave and I often talked about the bad water
conditions and that's why I was never a Lakes Bay regular.

I've never sailed at Lakes Bay but, if there are any marina's nearby then
they might be the cause of your smelly odor. At Kalmus on Cape Cod the
Hyannis Harbor gets increasingly smelly as the summer wears on. The
seaweed is also getting thicker and thicker each year. I've been told that
there are boat owners that illegally dump before they get into the harbor
or while actually in the harbor! Many have said the stuff acts like
furtilizer for the weeds. How are the weeds in Lakes Bay?

It's kind of funny, this is the first time I've ever heard anything
negative about the place. Is this smell enough of a problem where I should
avoid sailing there the next time I'm in NJ?

PS. Good one about Hoffa's body, I laughed really hard!!!

No, Lakes Bay is not near any marinas but it is only a short reach from
Atlantic City (Absecon Is). The population on that island explodes in
Summertime and especially weekends. The smell is noticable on weekends in
the tourist season. BTW: The waters of Lakes Bay are closed to shell
fishing after May of each year because of bad water. Doesn't stop the
wind, tho!

Ken,  Pat's not trying to "whitewash" the controversey, he's trying to
"brownwash" it!
