Where to sail in Bay area in March

I will be in bay area in mid march.  Where should I sail?  How cold is
the water this time of year? What stuff should I bring?  I live in WA
state.

Lately we've been getting hit pretty consistently with storm systems. The
storms have made for some serious high wind sailing at Berkeley and Alameda on
S and SE winds. Last weekend a lot of people were blown off the water on 4.0s.
The coast has also been blowing both south and north of the Gate. I was told
that sailors were blown off the water on 3.5s at Half Moon Bay the weekend
before last. On the other hand, I've found a lot 6.0 sailing between systems.
I'd bring gear for 4.0 to 6.0 conditions. March can be flukey. There is bound
to be a few monster days if your hear for a while. The pundits are claiming El
Nino will be the *** weather force here for at least a couple more months.
I think it has been great for the sailing as long as your willing to go at a
moments notice. I'd try not to decide where to sail now, but check in with Call
of the Wind once your ready to sail.

If the wind is South to East, go to Alemeda. Many of the
sites we use in summer time work best with West winds and
become very gusty when the wind clocks South because then
the wind approaches the sailing area over land. You want
the wind to approach the sailing area over a long stretch
of open water.

COLD.

Bring a 4/3 one piece or a drysuit, booties, gloves,
neoprene hat. Bring protection from the wind while
you are changing. March is not our sunny time of year.
