Hi,

I'm going to Scotland this summer.
Is there anyone out there who knows
where I can find the best windsurfing
conditions.

Thanks.

Karsten

Ft. Williams is probably best. And if it doesn't blow you can still enjoy
the great outdoors (highest Scottish mountain, waterfalls, etc.) or the
cosy stores and hang-outs in town. (I don't know of any rental off my head,
check a phone book.)

There are also rental places in the central highlands (where the Queen
spends her summer, forgot the name) around some ski resorts. They have
interesting termical winds which are usually pretty strong (but often
unsteady) in the afternoon. The lakes are often small though.

But beware: Weather is unpredictable at the west coast. You will find
much more sun in the central/ estern part. And you need a wetsuit.

I would be more prone to checking in Edinburgh for rentals. Its a big city
(250,000 + ) and has a fair number of active windsurfers there. If you run out
of options to try, send me email and I can dig up the phone number of a friend
of mine who lives there and sails an Astro Rock.

 Hi,
In general summer isn't the best time for w/s in Scotland since
the wind tends to be light. Spring & autumn are better. That said I'll
try & advise.

There are many attractive inland lochs (lakes) on which you can
windsurf. Popular ones with some facilities include Loch's Awe, Lomond
Earn, Morlich, Tay, Rannoch, Ness, Lochy and others I don't remember.

I would recommend Kenmore on Loch Tay as a good spot- not too many
Powerboats/Jetskis, but has hire facilities etc.

For coastal sailing, the Clyde coast is popular (Prestwick, Troon etc)
but see Jim's post about the *** beaches. There are hire facilities
at a few places but it's better to go to a shop & hire equipment and
then head for the beach yourself. Try Elie in Fife for coastal board
hire (water reasonably clean).

If you want waves (real waves) then you will probably be better to
take your (rented?) kit to somewhere remote which gets the brunt of the
Atlantic swell. The best spots are Machrahanish on the Mull of Kintyre,
near Campbletown, which is a long way from anywhere and Tiree, an
island which is a four hour ferry journey from Oban (I did say remote).
It isn't too difficult to find that you are alone on a beach with
big winds & strong waves- this is fine if you are in a group and can
look out for each other but there are some pretty wild conditions and
very changeable weather in Scotland so be canny.

Otherwise the best waves are on the Clyde coast- as mentioned above.

I will be happy to advise on specifics or give any more information
on windsurfing in Scotland- anyone who wants info please email me.

        W.
