Slow????  I was surprised how fast it went - when he goes out from a
dock to a motering sailboat and cruises past it, he covers the ground
in a couple of seconds - it would take 10X as long to row a tender that
far and 3 x as long to sail a schlogging board.  And he keeps up well
with the 4X shell and they are pulling hard and fast.  That ain't slow!
Sure looks ridiculous though!  Great fun for non-wind day.  It would
cruise past the stand-up paddle board like it was standing still (till
you stopped and sank, of course).  Looks like a challenge to learn as
well.

I actually think it's cool and almost practical...
But a real thigh burning workout and gotta be simple to get going...
just lay it in firm bottom 2' of water and start jumping!

Oh yeah, found the English site http://www.aquaskipper.com/  17 mph,
that is about 28 kmph, kindof a just-up-fully-planing-but-not-lit-up
kind of windsurfing speed.  I wonder what the average hopper does -
maybe 10 mph?  That is still fast for human-powered watercraft.

They weren't going that fast in any of the videos I saw.

I predict that standup paddleboarding will become an Olympic
sport...speed and distance...some of the world's best watersports
athletes have embraced it...

This was overheard in the chatter on the Swaylock's forum...

"The other amazing thing is the cross channel open ocean racing that
Bongo folks are doing in this format. The amazing part is that because
these surf the open ocean swells so well the top finishers who basically
are just amateurs in open ocean racing are finishing not too far behind
olympic and world champion class paddleboarders like Jamie Mitchell. The
buzz is so great that there's a professional racing circuit that'll soon
be started by a very big international sports manufacturer to help
promote this version of the sport which is obviously less of an
intrusion in the lineup than the current version."

Standup is taking off so fast that Swaylock's took a thread
down...something they almost never do, because it gave out too much
info...clearly displaying the superior wave-catching ability of standup
paddle surfboards...which threw kerosene on the raging fire of this
new sport...there have been meetings by the top dawgs in the sport on
Hawaii, to try and establidsh the rules of engagement...

requiring surfersto perform fun, synchronized tricks like the dying
cochroach, the Allen wrench, and the coffinpose. One of the most
popular additions is the Beachboy Style division, where surfers standing

canoe paddles. The Buffalo BigBoard Classic continues to represent the
spirit of what surfing is all about, honoring the values ofrespect,
tradition, family and pure fun.Interviews With Brian and Buffalo

FWIW, I was out at Makaha Sunday.  There were four guys stand up paddle
surfing.  That's a lot.

Picture this: Spring in S. Padre & Florida. College and Highschool kids
all over the place. They're all drunk off their skulls. The Hot babes
entice one of them to try the thing. He starts jumping the thing like
it's one of the hot babes, but begins to sink and is soon floundering.
Everyone's too drunk to save him, the hot babes are too kewl to know
any rescue techniques, and the guy drowns.

End of story.

I'd rather swim or kayak. This looks like too much work to be any fun.
