'93 sails: Help!

Post by Peter Sco » Thu, 11 Mar 1993 04:20:20

Hi! I just recieved Windsurfing Magazine's Buyers Guide yesterday. Wow! I
want to buy a sail this year. I'm looking for a fast sail that will perform
in a variety of conditions (Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada). I've got a '91
Bic Astro Rock (Acetec).I'm about 6" and weigh 160 lbs (I'm 17).
I want to go fast, but still have a good low end for the marginal conditions
we get on Lake Huron. I've looked at the Hot Sails Maui "XTR Extreme Fun"
series and I've really liked every UP sail that I've used. I'm wondering if
the sails in the $300-400 range, i.e. Neil Pryde "Gybe", the Gun Sails, and
Hood River Sails are noticeably weaker in performance than the more
expensive sails. I would love to own a North, UP, Mistral or Neil Pryde
sail, but my budget is moderate.
I'm also a bit confused with the mast thing. I'm looking for a sail
in the 6.0 range and would like to buy a mast that would be interchangeable
to some degree. Also, will the diameter of the mast totaly mess up the rest
of my rig, i.e. clamp on boom and mast base?
Any advice would be apprieciated and any feedback on what the sails
are like would be great!
Thanks in advance!

Kinda short and fat eh?  What do you need a board for? :-)

I have sailed a 5.5 m Hot Sails "XTR Extreme Fun" on a E-Rock and was very impressed by the sail, particularily at the price.  The sail is fast and works well in overpowering conditions; however, it does not have as good a bottom end as fully cambered race sails.  You can compensate partly for the weak bottom end by pumping onto a plane and by using a larger sail.  Performance Windsurfing Reports had a review of the sail in March, 93 (?) and gave it a rave review.  Considering the performance and sturdy c

onstruction I see it as a best buy unless you can obtain a Pryde, North or Gaastra race sail cheaper.  Silent Sports in Toronto had a sale last weekend and offered the 4.5 m XTR Fun for $299.  I can't remember the price for the other sizes. I would definitely recommend the XTR fun over the low priced sails from the "big-3" companies you mentioned.

Regarding masts: Stick with constant flex which is compatible with most sails and is not sail size dependent.

I am looking for a couple of used sails in good condition.  If
you have '90, '91, or '92 sails, single or twin cam slalom,
around 4.7 to 5.6 m2 sizes, suitable for MCS 25 CC mast (Fiberspar
red), please let me know.  I'll probably buy something at a
swap meet March 27th, if I haven't found something else first.

I've had windwings, sailworks, waddell, and neil-prydes recommended.
