Fiji, Vanuatu, Fiji Windsurfing?

Fiji, Vanuatu, Fiji Windsurfing?

My wife and I are trying to select our next vacation spot ( July, August
or September 1998) in the pacific.  We have visited Maui (fantastic) and
thought we would try a new destination.  I am an intermediate\advanced
slalom sailor and paulette is in the harness, planing but just water
starting and not in both straps yet.  At 52yo I am looking for fair
winds, good restaurants, diving, tennis, biking etc.  We have heard Vila
is pretty good and someone mentioned Fiji?  We expect to stay 2 to 3
weeks and enjoy a reasonable standard of hotel or resort accommodation
(I like beach hut or cabin style but not too rough).  I don't want to
carry my gear if  possible, prefer to hire but will depend on whats out
there.  We live on the West Coast of Australia, a bit far to ship
equipment if I don't have too.

Look forwards to hearing from you all.

Regards Bob and Paulette Dunlop

Fiji, Vanuatu, Fiji Windsurfing?

Bob,

The Matagi Island resort is incredible IMHO, but I'm not sure its for
everyone.  Matagi is a steep sided dead volcano covered with lush tropical
jungle about 1/4 miles square.  On one side is a flat section of land 300yds
wide and 100yds. deep. They have 10 Bures (grass huts, 3 rooms, on concrete
slabs with all the modern facilities, electricity), a great house for
gourmet meals and a dive/watersports shop.  Nice beech, too.  Its an all
inclusive package since there's nothing else on the island.  Boat access
from Taveuni, only!  We went there for the world class diving and fell in
love with everything.  Since then we had friends who toured much of the
Fijian isl. and came back with the report that Matagi was their favorite.
They had a very small selection of windsurfing equipment back then (6 yrs.
ago, maybe changed since?)  because they focus on diving.  I thought it
would have been an excellent sailing locale IF I had brought my own
equipment.  The Isl. is so small that you didn't have to sail very far to
get out of the shadow of the island so no worry about which way the wind
came from.

Fiji, Vanuatu, Fiji Windsurfing?

Hi Bob,

I know that Fiji is supposed to be one of the most beautiful places to
windsurf in the world but there is many equipment rental places there. You
should check the Travel section of the Neil Pryde website :
http://SportToday.org/
From there you will find the phone and Fax numbers of the NP center of
Fiji, you can start from there. But I believe that July to September is not
the best time of year to go there, I would think that the best time should
be in winter.
