New Video Review - "Going Off"

Well folks, I had the chance to pickup the new two part video series on
wave sailing techniques called "Going Off". I haven't seen it covered here
in rec.windsurfing so I just figured I'd let everyone know how awesome it
is. Essentially, it's advice from many of the top pro sailors about the
various aspects of wave riding, jumping, board and sail design, rules of
the road, and safety. Going Off is definitely one to permanently place on
your year round video shelf. It covers everything from getting over the
white water to the goiter. Other topics include:

Rules of the Road
Wave Selection & Timing
Safety
Bottom Turns
Top Turns
Off the Lips
Ariel 360's
Front Loops
Back Loops
Goiters
Big Wave Riding
Board Design
Sail Design
and more.....

There is advice coming at you from all angles by so many of the top pro
wave sailors it's staggering. I found the advice from both Josh Stone and
Jessica Crisp to be the best of the bunch. It was well articulated, to the
point, easy to comprehend and presented with a little bit of humor. For
anyone in search of waves this vid is unlike any other I've seen yet so
pick up a copy before they run out.

ps. I'm not in any way connected with this video, just one stoked sailor!!

OK, I went there.  So where is the review of Going Off?  I saw an ad for
RIP.

By the way I have both.

I am not a wave sailor but want to learn. I think this video went way
over my head from the get go. There were no basics, just a bunch of tips
from pro and top level amateur riders. Certainly good stuff for a
somewhat experienced wave sailor looking to improve, but missing a lot
of info I would want to get started.

I completely disagree. It talked about wave selection, timing your bottom
turn/top turn, making it out over the white water, wave equipment design,
general rules of sailing, and safety. Those are the biggest things you
need to know while learning to sail waves. True they spent quite a bit
more time on the higher end stuff but they did thoroughly address the
needs of a beginner and, if you can find another video that has done half
the job that Going Off has at explaining the art of wave sailing I'd like
to know the name because I've never seen or heard of it.

I bought it. I have watched it a few times now.  I am a total beginner as far as
wavesailing goes...Just a few times at Chapin in onshore and side-on.

I was hoping for some real video aided basic chalktalks like I have with the Cort
Larned jibe video I own.

OK, I have no other how-to videos on wave sailing.  If this is the best there is
for beginers I will not bother to look further.

I guess since it didnt satisfy me as a beginner and I am wrong about it covering
basics I am stupid.  Maybe someday when I am smart the tips will be useful to me.

Right on Skip!  But remember, "Going Off" is a 2 volume set.  Volume
2 talks about things like wave-360's, one handed tabletops, and sailing
in double mast-high surf.  Could Walter be basing his opinions on
volume 2 perhaps?  I can tell you unless you read the jacket carefully,
it's easy not to notice which volume you're watching.

Other than that, I agree with you that volume 1 defines the essentials of
beginning wavesailing.  The tips and demonstrations they present set the
standard for an instructional wavesailing video.  I've never seen anything
like.  It's without a doubt Brian Caserio's best effort to date.  I
congratulate him.

Think waves!

New Video Review - "Going Off"

Post by SideO » Fri, 26 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I'm stoked to see some talk about our new video.  I can sympathize with
both Walter's and Skip's point of view, although I like Skip's better, of
course.   One thing I've learned with videos is you just can't please
everyone, and I guess you shouldn't try.
My mission with Going Off was to do an instructional (I called them
tips) wavesailing video but make it entertaining as well.  I also thought
that since wavesailing is very personal and everyone does it differently,
that I should get several perspectives on it.  Also, by interviewing the
top pros I could bring these personalities that you normally only see in
pictures in magazines to life.
I also knew that by using top pros it would be difficult to make the
video super basic.  Regardless, it is very difficult to actually tell
someone how to wavesail since everyone approaches it differently and
conditions vary so greatly.  So I think the most valuable lesson is to
watch how confident these sailors are (who were beginner wavesailors at
one time too) and hopefully incorporate that confidence into your sailing.
Since the video is in the form of casual interviews you've got to listen
carefully to pick up on some critical tips that can otherwise take years
to figure out.   And the more basic tips grow on each other so as your
sailing improves other more advanced tips will have more meaning to you.
I'll bet not too many people can outgrow this video.

Brian, I am a beginer in the waves, my boyfriend is an expert. We BOTH
got a lot of useful information out of the video. It was very
inspirational to me.
Maybe next time, show more people shredding out here in your home turf
(West coast, CA).
Keep up the good work!!

This video really seems to be "going off". Although i don't have a VCR
i'd be interested to get hold of it. Is it already imported
to Europe ? I didn't find it mentioned in any
of the latest suyrf rags over here, so where to get a (PAL) version ??

The vid is awesome! My wife and I have watched it (or some portion) at
least everyday since we got it! Love that part "Bad as a
mutha,......". Excellent tips from the pros! I also really liked the
sail and board design portions. For those of us that don't have access
to that kind of info, it is a tremendous help. Depending on how
trained some salepeople are, they don't alway know those kind of
details about equipment. Hell, I'd love to see a yearly video, just
covering the sail and board design portions!

Thanks for another excellent video Brian!

Going Off is not quite available in Europe yet.  I'm working on it.  First
samples should be ready in about a week, but there is usually quite a lag
time showing up in the magazines.
