How is the Grand Teton the First week of September

Post by Rodney Ea » Sat, 19 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Has anyone climbed the Grand Teton the first week of September?  and

has anyone been to the Tetons recently.  I'm going to be there from Sept 4-10.
    What is the snow like?
    Any bear problems?
What do I need to be aware of at this time of year?

Any advice would be appreciated since this is my first climbing trip in
the Tetons.

Thanks

We had just a light dusting of snow on the tetons this a.m.  But the day
warmed and most melted leaving mostly dry rock on southern faces.  As
sept approaches you can certainly expect some cooler weather and some
similar precip.  Sept USUALLY stays rather nice, but when it comes to
weather who can predict? You need clothing suitable for freezing
conditions.  The snow that is remaining from last winter will be usually
hard enough to walk on and you will need crampons in the morning.  Ice
should be showing up on the glaciers.  The new snow will be soft and may
sluff off during the warm weather.  I haven't heard of much in the way of
bears in Garnet canyon but one should always hang food etc.  Have a good
time.

My son climbed the Grand 8-22.  The route to the upper saddle was clear as
were the primary routes on the south and west sides of the Grande.  It appears
at this point that the weather will hold into September, but snow is possible
any time on top.  Suggest you check with the rangers just before you come.
Also check the weather forcast. By the way, the same day he climbed it two
people were seriously injured climbing between the upper and lower saddle.

How is the Grand Teton the First week of September

I climbed the Grand teton last year on September 10th or so.  We had perfect weather.  We did the Exum Ridge (typical :)).  It was warm and sunny, although a bit cool at night.  However, as we descended the 2nd day, it became cloudy and rained a bit.  After we made it to the car, we saw the summit totally socked in and snowing like hell.  Timing is key.  Expect the worst, enjoy the best!!!.
