That's the word.  You might try calling.

Anywhere between the top of the gully and where you would put your skis on
~6 miles up the road, depending on conditions.

I was down there in October and it sounds like the route will pretty
surely be closed until "spring", not exactly sure what date that
means.

Calling to confirm is recommended but could be confusing; I tried
calling before I went down (though not because I wanted to climb
Hallucinogen!), and talked to a couple of people in apparent official
phone-answering positions who had no idea of the closures.  You need
to talk to a ranger or someone like that to see if things have
changed; just make sure whoever you are talking to knows what closures
you are talking about to begin with.

Btw/fyi--only the Hallucinogen and about 3 other aid routes in the
immediate vicinity (sharing pitches) were closed.

Apparently, there's a mess on them. Someone fell. I posted on it on Sept
29. A google search for "route closures in the Black Canyon (CO)" should
turn up my post if the above link doesn't.

I don't get it. Route closed due to falling tourists?

I can see the sign now, "Please don't fall off. There are climbers below."

Classic.  Reminds me of the time we took my parents to the Grand Canyon.  After
dinner one night, we walked one of the rim trails and as we stood near the edge
watching the sun set, my wife told my dad that she didn't understand why people
would *** with guns or knives when they could just hike the rim with the
doomed and give a little nudge...  Dad backed away.  Immediately.

According to the rangers, the routes are, as Ben said, a "mess".
There are some slabby portions at the bottom which probably made it
worse.  I don't think it is being investigated; they believe it was an
accident as far as I know.

well, according to rock and ice at:
http://www.rockandice.com/breaking%20news/breaking%20news.html

There was a death, a likely suicide, in the Black Canyon on 9/20. (Jeff
Achey, regional coordinator for the Access Fund didn't know the person's
name but has no reason to think he was a climber.)

Body parts have been found on the Hallucinogen Wall, North Chasm View
Wall.

The NPS rangers there have apparently been very informed. They could have
closed the whole North Chasm View Wall for the recovery (still
incomplete) but know the routes there which are affected, and are only
closing the Hallucinogen Wall area. It will be open again at 8
a.m. Friday, Oct. 11 (in time for the Columbus Day weekend). Closed routes
until then are: the Hallucinogen Wall, High and Dry, La Visage, Mark of
Caine, and Paint It Black.

I know it's not a democracy, but I'm making my vote public for a little
more sensitivity on this one - the guy who fell was a human being. He did
have a family. They probably have internet access.

When I was there, the ranger told me that a YOSAR guy tried to head up the
route the week after the accident, and bailed after three pitches because
it was too much for him. You can nail where you want, but there's a lot of
rock in the Black, and even if I was up to that route, I wouldn't mind
waiting a bit.

Sorry, is that Oct 11 2003?  Or is it open now?

Also does the new guide cover aid routs like the Dragon route.

Cheers
