FAQ?: Climbing clinics near L.A. and NYC

Planning some vacation 'round Labor Day.  I'm going to be in the L.A.
area and I'm interested in a climbing clinic, outdoor and indoor that
caters well to total beginners like me ...

For that matter, right now, I'm sort of looking for the same thing
in NYC.  One scenario that came to mind just now was to start 'training'
now for a really good time in CA.

Since I'm a total beginner, price is probably paramount.  Thanks ...

Eastern Mountain Sports on West 61 St. can probably point you.

I have friends who attended a climbing school that is based in New Paltz,
NY. The cliffs to the west of New Paltz (the Schawngunks - that's
mispelled) are considered some of the finest climbing in the country. Try
some of the climbing/outdoor sports stores in New Paltz, they would know
about schools. My friend was a beginner too, and after interviewing a
couple of instructors he and his gf found someone they really liked.
EMS may have info, but they are no longer a "real" outdoors supplier. Try
REI in New Rochelle, NY, their staff is more knowledgeable and has more
outdoor experience, IMHO.
FYI - New Paltz is about 65 miles north of the city, slightly inland of
the west bank of the Hudson. It's an easy drive, there is bus service and
it's the home of SUNY New Platz.

About 1 hour out of NYC is a great climbing school, Mountain Sports.  It
is a very friendly small shop.  But, don't be fooled, the owner Lyle is
very serious, certified, and professional.  Call any time 908 735 6244.

He is a close friend, tell him Speak said hello.
