4th of July weekend at Sunset Beach!

Post by Buggy Bis » Wed, 07 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Considering the weather forecast for this last weekend, here in the
NW, was so bad.  I didn't expect to buggy much.  Fortunately for us
the weather folks got it wrong and a great weekend was had by all.

Saturday was gloomy with some showers now and then.  But the wind was
straight on-shore and the rain didn't show till the tide was coming
in.  We were able to buggy up and down the beach quite a bit.  I was
finally able to evaluate the axle that I have for the Libre buggy with
adjustable tilt for the back wheels.  I got mixed results and think
the angle was too great and caused too much drag for the desired
affect.  Dave Lord told me that 8 degrees of tilt is optimum based on
testing done by the landsailers folks.

We also got a second session in this day around sunset.  Haven't been
able to do this yet this summer. (what little summer we have had so
far)  Buggying into the sunset is a great thing with just an orange
glow to illuminate the kites.  Almost as good as buggying under a full
moon.  We had a few close calls with fireworks and kites but no damage
that we could find.

Sunday the 4th was bright and sunny.  Wind out of the southwest.  We
picked a spot that was less travelled and had few cars come by for
most of the day.  Usually the traffic is too much to buggy, must have
been the forecast.

A bunch of us took a run down to the Peter Iredale wreck and back.  I
was having so much fun that I completely forgot about the the sign we
can't go past during the summer.  Eli just followed me in.  I just
wanted to buggy around the wreck officer, honest!  ;8-{0  !!!!!  No
tickets and I did get to buggy right though the center of the wreck,
hadn't done that before!  Wind died down on the way back upwind.  For
all my concern about taking a big kite, it was the right choice coming
back.  We actutally stopped a baseball game in progress when 5 of us
buggyed by in a tight pack.  Literally dropped the ball and bat, mouth
wide open!  What a sight all of us weaving in and out of each other,
What fun!!!

I do have to mention one mishap this day.  Eli and I were going
backwards close together.  The wind gusted and dragged me not into but
right on top of him.  My back axle rolled right up the front tire and
popped over the front forks and slid down the downtube.  Glad he
was riding my other buggy.  All I heard was "OUCH...OUCH...OUCH!!!"
and I could'nt get out of the buggy fast enough!!!  No *** or real
injury!  Eli had a scape but that was all. I just trapped him in.

Tides coming in time to eat.  Big thanks goes to Kurt & Linda
Andersen!!!  Bacon burgers with all of the t***s.  If you've never
been to the NWBPA meeting on thursday during WSIKF, its a great feed
and last year we had 80-90 people there.

With the approach of sunset the fireworks were everywhere.  I don't
think I saw one legal firework the whole time!  Maddog had some big
bangs and the echo off the water sounded like a rifle shot.  The shock
wave pushed you back in your seat.

Monday was the best, not because the sky was completely clear, and the
wind came up strong at slack tide.  The best part was getting to play
in the water with the kites.  We buggyed for a while and the Jason
Clack decided he was going to try to Kite Surf.

I was all for this as I hadn't seen it before, so I went along to
help.  Wind was a little light for his C2.  The beach at Sunset forms
these mini-lagoons behind the sand bars that are 2-3 feet deep with
sharp drop offs.  Jason tried to hold the kite and get his feet in the
board to no avail.  I had him sit at the edge of the sandbar with the
board over 18" deep water.  Once he was set, I handed him the kite and
away he went.  Just like he knew what he was doing!  Took him three
runs to finally dump the kite in the water.  At least he got to wash
the Alvord dust off of it.  Not too bad for a first time.  Since I was
half wet anyway it was time to buggy through the surf.  I hadn't done
that in a while.  Then I decided to go through the mini-lagoon, big
mistake.  Got dragged out of the buggy and through the shallow water
pretty good.  I think the whole camp was laughing when I was done.  Oh
well, lose the harness and let's go body surfing.  The shallow water
was slowly getting deeper, we finally quit when the water was to our
necks.

Overall it was a great long weekend.  For all you folks here in the NW
remember that Westport Kite Festival is this weekend, July 10 & 11.
We're gonna try and have some fun races and have been talking about
tying a class in with it for those interested.  Should be a lot of fun
and generally lots of buggyiers.

Till then, keep on Buggying, no Parakarting, no Buggying,
no....whatever!!!

Thank you for the great recap of the weekend... I'm planning on
attending WSIKF this year (my first), and was sooooooo glad to hear
that there will be buggiers present!   Should I bring the buggy and
foils?  Will there be room and opportunity to buggy on the beach?
(I've never tried buggying on anything but Ivanpah and adjacent dry
lakes, here in Las Vegas... bet you just pity me, doncha?)  Sounds
like you've got a great bunch of buggy enthusiasts up there in the NW,
look forward to meeting ya!

Nothing is foolproof, to a sufficiently talented fool!

Bring all of it.  Mainly the big foils.  August in the NW usually has
light winds.

Also, don't forget that on Thursday of that week is the NWBPA meeting
&BBQ on Sunset Beach.  Planning on some races that day also.

See ya there!
