Buggy sites near North London

Are there any good places within an hour of Finchley (North London) for
buggying and landyachting? The landyacht needs more open places with fewer
trees so a nice flat beach would be sweet, is there anywhere near Southend?

I will check out hackney marshes and wormwood scrubs at some stage soon.

Not tried Hackney yet, but for buggying there's Hainault Country Park which
is large but bumpy and surrounded by trees.  Also Stopsley Leasure Centre in
Luton is well worth a trip.  It's basically a load of footy pitches so you
have to navigate the goal posts but it is right on the top of a large hil
over looking Luton, so the wind is good and constant.  There's a short
review of stopsley on Helen's site www.aeolian.co.uk

Thanks for the tips..... how rutted is the ground at stopsley? The landyacht
need as smooth a surface as possible.

Give Uxbridge Ski Slope a try. Come off A40 at Uxbridge (Swakeleys roundabout)
and turn towards the cricket club. Go to the bottom left of the car park and
you can see the fields from there. A few of us use it mainly on a Sunday.

Stopsley is quite smooth, sort of normal footy pitches I assume, but not
sure how they'd take to land yachts.
Tony, how big is the area at uxbridge?  I could get some skiing/boarding and
some buggying in at the same time    :o)

You wouldn't get any skiing in as it is all run down. boarding (kite) is ok on
the fields as they are about 6ish football pitches in area if not bigger

David: thanks for the link :-)

Uxbridge is only about 10 minutes drive from us, but Stopsley is miles
better for buggying: 1) facilities in the Leisure Centre, (e.g.
toilets!!) and 2) slightly safer car parking.. Uxbridge car park always
has lots of broken glass around ;-)

Not sure about landyachts though, we generally have permission from the
groundsman at Stopsley (as long as no one goes over the cricket
pitches!) for buggies. Landyachts however are a whole new kettle of fish
at Stopsley and probably one best checked out beforehand with Leisure
Centre management... !

Hey Tony.
Since the slope seems to be derelict (at least viewed as I whiz passed it on
the A40 in the evening),
does this mean you can go buggying there even when there's no wind :-)
