Lurker responds to sleeving spectra

Post by JTav » Sat, 11 Jun 1994 05:08:02

Hello eveyone!

I've been lurking for about a month now and have enjoyed everything
on rec-kites.
Since this is my first posting,I'll try to be brief.  Ihave been
flying kites for over ten years and been a competitor on the east
coast (and other events) for the last five years. Most of my friends
and I have found that sleeving spectra line to be a waste of time.

I have not sleeved any of my spectra and have not had one
failure at the knot. If the knot of the line is the weakest, even
with sleeving, then why does the line almost always break about 5
inches from the Knot? Besides, if I am going to have line snap, I
want it to Break at the knot, and not in the middle!
BTW my line sets consist  80# line for my Scorpions to 300# line for
stacks of flexis and my buggy set up. I'd like to here from other
people who have given up the frustrating practice of sleeving
spectra.

Hi John!  I just thought I'd add my "two cents worth."  I have "Spiderline"
brand spectra that dates back to sometime around 1986 or 1987 (I'm really
not [knot] sure), I have NEVER sleeved spectra and have NEVER had a break
at the knot.  I will also add though, that I HAVE experienced the same
breaking that you mention approx. five (5) inches (13mm) from the knot.

For what its worth....

I seem to be a wimp, but I have never broken a line.  I do sleeve my
lines because everyone I know sleeves there lines.
I do cheat a little and use sleeves that have a small piece of line
already strung through them.  I usually buy those for 25 cents a
piece which is cheap considering how much you paid for the Spectra
Line.

Random Thought:
Maybe the sleeving gives the not a better grip on the connecting
line?...just a thought

I don't know, my sleeved spectra lines don't break at knot,
or nearby:-) I'll _try_ to abandon old lines before they break
in the middle.

I have changed the "frustrating practice" to a pleasant kite
building activity by getting a good (self made) sleeving tool
(1 ft loop of piano wire). I imagine that unsleeved 50 lb spectra
which is larks headed on the bridle, is frustrating to unknot,
and wears pretty soon.

Isn't there a kind of line that is part spectra and part dacron that does
not require sleeving?

I know my main kite line source Hang-em High does not carry it though they
do have great prices on spectra. Does anyone else know of a discount source
for this type of line?

Thanks

As a counterpoint, I flew power kites on unsleeved 300lb Spectra twice
within my first year of flying.  Both times, I broke it within a few
minutes of vigerous flying.

On the other hand, I now fly bigger kites but put less strain on both
the equipment or myself.  I often double up the line and attatch with an
unsleeved larkshead and havn't yet broken my 275lb Spectra this way.

The only time that I've had a not-at-the-knot break was when I tried to grab
a flyaway stack with tangled lines.  Fortunately the line cut through
it'sself before making more than 25% progress through my finger.
