Hi,
I didn't realize this until recently. My 25 years of lower back pain
is gone after moving to Michigan and getting a season of X country
skiing in. The results seem to be staying with me although I have not
been skiing in months. anyone elese notice this phenomena?

X-Country Skiing Relieves Back Pain

About two years ago I had so much pain in my back, and subsequently leg
(caused by a badly slipped disc in my lower lumbar), that I could hardly
move.  As the pain receded slightly, I took up roller skiing for the
partial purpose of strengthening the muscles in my abdomen and back.
The pain disappeared, never to return (so far - touch wood), and I have
never ever been in better shape (I am 42 and counting) this side of boot
camp.

I give all the credit for this remarkable recovery to my roller skis!

I'd have to agree that XC has helped my back. I had a lamenectomy(L5 S1)
in 1991 and it wasn't until I got back into XC, 3 years ago, that all my
pain disappeared.

X-Country Skiing Relieves Back Pain

I developed severe sciatic pain while running competatively in college in
the mid '80s.  This pain continued for 10 years during which time I was out
of most aerobic activities.  I received chiropractic care for 6 years after
xrays revealed I had a degenerated disc in my lumbar region.  After moving
to New Hampshire 7 years ago I took up xc skiing and now get out 2-3 times a
week in the winter.  I have been pain free during this period.  I attribute
this to the non-impact nature of the sport and the excellent job it does of
conditioning and stretching my leg and lower back muscles.  BTW, in the
summer I ride my mountain bike to get additional low-impact aerobic exercise
(I ride mostly on dirt rodes and leave the rocky trails to the young guys).
