Here's that latest skier report from ALTA:

Days: 1
Resort: Alta
Hours: Day

Ability: Expert
Loved: As always, alta kicks butt.
Closed: Keyhole gate
Moguls: powder

Details:

BEYOOTIFUL!

A very nice snowfall of 8-12 inches made Westward Ho the spot of choice on
Friday.  The storm in the valley coupled with all of the high school
students gone south for spring br break ensured that us locals would have
the mountain to ourselves.  For the first time in who knows how long, the
Germania lift was empty. The lower half of rustler was excellent in the
trees but the upper third and High rustler sucked.  Windblown and icy
unless you are in the forest where ther was a 2-3 inch powder on a 2 inch
crust.  Sunspot was an utter disaster. The combination of freeze-thaw and
constand wind destroyed the entire face. After 2 runs on Germania, I got
smart and returned to my old stomping grounds in Westward Ho and Black-Jack
for the powder that was still literally untracked by the end of the day.
Thanks to all the folks who gave me rides back to the lifts from the bypass
road.

Heading out to Utah for the weekend to see if the Wasatch are better
that the Sierras this year. Someone said Alta was closing half it's
lifts on Sunday. Is this true? Are they important lifts? Are they mad?
There's more snow than anyone knows what to do with, and they're
closing lifts? I've never been to Alta, but it looks like I'll be
skiing Snowbird both days.

Half the lifts closed *last* Sunday. Two of the three that are closed
serve beginner terrain. Most of the really interesting terrain except for
the supreme area will be accessible from the lifts that remain open.

Alta never closes due to lack of snow- always because of a lack of skiers.

In your many years of study, did you ever take Economics 101?
Alta is in business to make a profit.

: According to a local informant, they have to close completely this
: weekend because they don't have an open-ended insurance
: policy. Snowbird does, so they are more flexible as to when they
: close. Anyway, when I was skiing there a couple of weeks ago, there
: was powder on Saturday and Sunday, but very few skiers (although on
: Sunday that might be because the canyon was closed for avalanche work
: for a couple of hours in the morning).

I was at Alta today- the lift operator said they are closing tomorrow
(Sunday the 23) becuase their contract from BLM to use the land runs out.
But, I don't blame them.  No one was there.  Cecret, Supreme, and Wildcat
are closed.  It was like Decemeber skiing today- cold, foggy, windy, and
snowing like crazy.  But, still great.

No, I'm a biologist. But there were loads of people there on Sunday.
The longest lift line I've been in all season was the Germania lift at
four o'clock. There was buckets of snow and economically they could
easily have stayed open for another few weeks. The reason they are
closing is that they don't have a license from the National Forest
people to stay open any later than the 23rd April (this year). The
locals were pretty bummed about it (except for the hotel staff who got
the afternoon off, and will stay skiing at Snowbird).

Looks like I picked the wrong weekend to go to Utah from the reports
from Tahoe. Oh well you can't win them all.
