Going to Rochester NY on business, where do I ski?

Post by John Jens » Mon, 26 Dec 1994 02:59:24

Hello,

I'm going to the Rochester area on business at the first of the year.  I
was thinking I might add a couple days to the trip and ski.  Are there
any big ski areas in that part of New York?

I'm looking for some long intermidiate runs (steep blues or shallow
blacks :-)).

I'm coming from California and don't know anything about the Northeast,
so any info will be appreciated.

We have 2 ski areas within 60 miles of Roch.  However, when compared to Ca,
these areas are puny.  The biggest problem wil be lack of snow.  It's the
26th and while driving from Albany to Roch today, I saw people playing golf
on several courses along the NY Thruway.  If any area is open, it will be
with very limited skiing.

Wish I could give you better news....

Even though we don't have a lot of snow, Holiday Valley in Ellicottville
has among best skiing in Western New York.  They are about 1 hour drive from
Rochester.  I was there Friday night - they had 5 lifts and 15 slopes open,
that's about one third of the facilities.  It's disappointing, but, at least
you can be out on the slopes.

Thanks for the info.  I think I'll wait and see how January conditions
are before I reschedule my trip.

Well, Bristol and Swain are both open. I am on ski patrol at swain
and we have 6 trails open. Not much, but it is skiing on a loose granular
surface. It is supposed to get colder this weekend, which should help.
BTW, We golfed 9 holes on Tuesday am, and skied that night. Very weird, for
western NY. The only other time I did this was in Portland OR in June, only
we skied early and golfed late.

FYI, Bristol is about 45 min SE of Rochester. Swain is about 1 hr due
south of Rochester, and Holiday Valley is about 90 min - 2hr from
Rochester City limits. I don't know how that other guy does it in an
hour, because there are too many little towns to go through on the way.

... case letters in the address.  If you address the mail as I have done it
