Hill climbing (basic knowledge needed!)

Would anyone care to try to describe all the motions/timings/etc that come
together to make a truly efficient V1 climbing technique?

I guess what I would like to know is how much of the total drive up the hill should
come from the skate step vs. the poling action?  I feel as though I just sort of
fall from the glide ski onto the power ski without much of a push-off.
Unfortunately, this also seems to require 80-90% of the power to come from the pole
push.  
Should I be trying to get more power out of the weight/ski transfer?
Should I drive through from the heel, the toe, or from a flat foot?  
How does one do this and still get the timing right (ski/poles hit snow/pavement at
same time)?

It's a very difficult task to describe these motions in written form. It
is far better to learn from a good ski instructor, either on snow or on
wheels. My suggestion is to look up someone in your area (preferable a
professional ski instructor and not your best friend and definitely not
your spouse) and take a lesson.

I've been hill climbing for many years and still never found a
satisfactory way to do away with more polling than I enjoy.  Whenever i've
tried to rely mainly on leg push and minimized poles I found my progress
slower than I enjoy.
My favorite climbing technique is polling up steeper areas and over waxing
a bit and legging it otherwise.
I don't fear reaching a peak with my arms totally washed out, since I know
I'll be using mostly legs all the way down.  It balances out.
This is non racing technology of course.

The original question related only to skating technique.  
I have since come to the conclusion that a lot of the drive up the hill is
created by a FORCEFUL push off the glide-side ski onto the pole-side ski (for
lack of a better description).

But make sure you aren't in the 'sit back' 'potty' position when so doing! Keep hips
pretty high and step forward up the hill before making that strong push. Use poles
to help you make the twist/step up. Step forward with *both* strong and weak
sides (vital!). A lot if you're strong, as much as possible if you're not. It keeps you
in an efficient posture. This HAS to be more impt than simple forcefulness. --You
need force in the right direction with the right skeletal arrangement to give good
speed yet not be tiring. I don't *ever* think about simply pushing hard during any
XC move.  (Except in the overall sense of gogogo! charge! attack!) And
onesidedness is kinda outta the picture, except in pure resting/cruise modes
perhaps.

Josh Thompson had a good progression for efficeint skating   tech.
Balance, Weight shift, then poling. Once you have become proficeint in
these three fundamentals power and speed can be added.
Also get some videos of World Cup events and watch what the best in the
world are doing. I find watching the video in slow motion yields much more
info then just watching in real time.
I feel the most important component to good uphill skiing is a very good
weight tranfer to the new ski. When done properly skiing uphill should
have what I call a floating component to it. This can only be accomplished
if your body follows in the direction of your ski. To help with this
concept I define forward movement as the direction your ski is traveling
as opposed to the direction of the trail.
Use video, practice the basics, and follow your skis up the hill. Also try
to find someone in your area to offer some lessons and feedback. Video can
be very helpful.
 You shouldn't be dependent on poling to get uphill. Poling should enhance
your uphill skiing. If you can't ski uphill without your poles go back to
the basics. Balance and Weight tranfer.
