purchasing the best ski equipment for me

Post by zan.. » Wed, 17 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on what the best skis to buy are for the following criteria:

        1.  Expert/Intermediate skier (Wants to work on bumps this year; has mastered the carve)

        2.  Mostly East Coast w/ the occasional Rocky Mtn skiing experience

        3.  Price range not important just quality (Buying by Sept 27th)

Direct opinions on following skis would be appreciated:

        1.  Olin Radius K

        2.  K2 Merlin IV

        3.  Head 26X

        4.  Fischer Ice Scream

Also any other skis I should look into and why also would be appreciated.  Please send replies if possible to

All responses are appreciated and I want to say thank you in advance for all your help.

Here's a hint; check out the Tyrolia MC 5. bump/extreme ski, very turny,
tons and tons of rebound, and well-priced against other brands.

Unbelievable rebound: very very snappy in the short turns, giggle skis!
But, I found them also a bit niggily in ice, crud and crust, though they
were good in good snow.
But they hated doing long turns. You'd work up to the apex, and the ski
would go "Next turn!!! NOW!!!". They just would not hold through GS
turns at all. but punch them into short turns and they'd rocket you off
the apex, turning into the next turn whether you wanted to or not.
They've got me hunting for a slalom ski with bulko rebound (but I'm
after a conventional).
I couldn't get them to hold on ice at all; they'd bite then lose it and
swing, but other people say they're good. so...
