Norway skiing advice

Post by reg.go.. » Wed, 01 Mar 2006 20:08:14

I'm likely to be in Oslo mid/late March, and hoping to have 3 or 4 days
free for (downhill) skiing.  I've never been there and am looking for
advice as to resort etc. Hemsedal, for example, looks reasonable and
only a few hours from Oslo.

Any recommendations?

Many thanks, Reg

Umm only been there once many, *many* moons ago, so treat this with
the contempt it deserves, but Geilo is supposedly 3.5 hours from Oslo
by rail and the train passes right through it. If you're lucky it
might even stop there!

Downhill skiing is limited in that a keen piste basher could probably
do all the downhill runs within a day or two. IIRC, it's really
intermediate terrain. It's also split between two areas, though I did
one day shuffle cross-country most of the way between the two areas
across the fjord on Alpine skis, so not *that* bad, but then I'm a
bit... odd.

I think Hemsedal is supposed to be a bit more Alpine in feel, but I
can't say, having never been there. The countryside around Geilo
comprises rounded low mountains or perhaps high hills, covered
surprisingly (to me, anyway) in birch forests.
