Help with Heel Pain, Heel Spur/Achilles

Since the summer I have suffered from a dull pain when I run in the bottom rear
of my left heel.  I was doing a lot of bicycle riding and not much running but
that didn't seem to help.  I've tried taking a couple of weeks off and that
also does not seem to help.  One thing that does help is icing it.  I went to a
good Foot Doctor who also runs and he advised me that I had a heel spur and
that it was irritating the Achilles tendon.  He prescribed stretching, the wall
stretch five times a day and some Vioxx. The Vioxx upset my stomach and the
stretching did seem to help a bit but not very much.  His diagnosis was made
without X-Rays.  I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar
experience.  I was wondering if a shot of cortisone would help or possible

Thank You
