Good luck with your races, you've already received some sound advice. For what it's worth,
my personal experience: in mid-December I ran my first ever half marathon but had 7 weeks
after that to my second marathon ever Feb. 17. For that half marathon race, I ran slightly
faster than my goal pace for the marathon and finished in just under 2 hours, it was a good
training experience...I felt I had some gas left in the tank but was better not pushing it
too much, I think.
Feb. 17 I ran a 4:27 marathon. My long run three weeks before my Feb. marathon was 22 miles
in 3:53, so I was running a GOOD bit slower than my marathon pace and tapered and recovered
in plenty of time to do well in the marathon.
I think Doug's advice is the best of all--whatever pace you start at, run faster the last
half of your half-marathon than the first half, even if only by a few seconds per mile; if
you can exercise that discipline, it will give you a great feeling about your race plan for
the marathon. Definitely don't run a flat out best possible race and then expect to be at
your best 3 weeks later for your first marathon.
