Armpit weirdness

This summer, on two separate occasions,  I have developed a strange rash in
my armpits.  It showed up early in the summer following a long (13 mile)
run, and again last week after another run of the same distance.  These are
the 2 longest runs I have ever done.  It first appears like several mosquito
bites, but becomes a more generalized, somewhat itchy and sort of painful
rash.

Do you think this is running related?  Have you had the same trouble?  What
can I do to solve the problem, as I have a half marathon on this weekend's
schedule?

Anyone?

Sounds like chaffing and sweat.  Try some body glide in the
area that is painful...worked for me.

Brian,

Ah, the armpit weirdness finds another victim. i suffered through some
of that last winter. the dry weather may have been a contributing factor
at the time... not sure if that's what it's like where you are.

i investigated several things to solve my problem:

-the shirt fit... if it is fairly snug under the armpits, you're not
going to get chafing from the rubbing of skin against skin while
running. i favour looser shirts, which encourage this problem. that's
gradually changing.

-changed to a laundry detergent without a lot of perfumes, dyes,
phosphates (these things can irritate skin, especially where fabric may
rub while running)

-switched to a moisturizing, hypo-allergenic body soap (Dove brand)

-tried different deodorants/anti-perspirants... some of them dry the
skin and/or may cause an allergic reaction

-i was doing a lot of swimming at the time, and suspected the chlorine
levels, so i tried different pools

-the swimming often meant at least two showers per day. that was drying
out my skin. it was advised that i make showers shorter and with cooler
water (when it's cool, you'll get outta there sooner!) to soothe the itch

-i used the Bodyglide product on the sensitive areas, and while it
prevented further chafing or whatever, it ended up being a contributing
factor to the itchiness. after the skin condition went away, and i
continued using Bodyglide, i would get little flare-ups. i stopped with
the Bodyglide, and voila! no more problems. mind you, by then the
seasons had changed and the air was far less dry. i never really got a
good idea of what caused the rash. but Bodyglide certainly didn't help
(me).

-i used Vaseline intensive care lotion for a while on the spots, then
got a prescription from the doctor. yes, it was THAT bad.... woke me up
at night sometimes.

best of luck!

Also maybe a minor allergy to the deodorant you're using--change to another
brand--also, the Body Glide can help!

BodyGlide might irritate your skin, especially if it's already sensitive.
If this happens to you, try a Vaseline equivalent.  It's messier but
works as well as BodyGlide to stop chafing.

I have experienced the same thing.  Your description was perfect.  But, the
first time this happened to me I hadn't become a runner yet, so for me...
it wasn't running related.  I determined that it was a deodorant allergy.
There are just some deodorants that I can't tolerate for extended periods
of time.  So, like a smoker with a nagging cough... maybe you just need to
switch brands.  Check the label to make sure you are changing to something
that doesn't have the same chemicals (dyes, fragrance).

Sort of. Doesn't affect many runners 'cause they have no upper body.
More of a problem for guys with developed lats or people of flab.

Hey, maybe the cough is telling the smoker something, and it ain't about the
brand.

Agree about the deodorant though, I know some folks who had the same thing happen
to them.
