Do they let you wear a walkman during a marathon?

yes only because   i've actually never heard of a marathon that
didn't allow them.

however, it's always best to call the race promoter and ask them
whenever you have specific questions about the race itself.

It depends on the marathon.  I think that it is better not to wear a
walkman during a marathon or any race.  Without the walkman, you are
safer since you can hear the people around you.  Also, hearing and
talking to the people around you and the crowd is extremely motivating.
I am a regular walkman user on training runs, but not in races.

Good luck,

Lisa

I totally agree with Lisa. Part of the fun of the race is not just being
able to run the course but experiencing the sounds of other people--their
pounding feet, their breathing, the wind, etc. Using a walkman seems to
me almost like cutting oneself from other folks.

Grandma's Marathon officially "discourages" the use of walkmans, and I
thought that Twin Cities prohibited them, though I can't find that now
looking at their web pages.  Asking the race folks certainly seems
like a good idea if you can't find the information anywhere else.

Strictly speaking, wearing a walkman  contravenes IAAF rules which prohibit
outside assistance. A runner could use a repeating rhythm to help them keep
up a certain pace.
However, unless you are likely to finish in the award placings overall or in
your age group, it is unlikely that you would get disqualified. Check with
the race director first though.

Some people are loners, and some loners are runners.  I tend to only run
with a walkman, and I enjoy running, and racing plenty.  However, I
don't wear it at the start, at the finish, or for the first 2 - 3 kms as
safety becomes an issue, but after that I find that it helps me relax
and reduces anxiety.  We're lucky here in Canada that we can listen to
the CBC which isn't music, and sometimes can be fueling to the mind.  I
wouldn't recommend loud music (I keep it fairly quiet so that I am still
aware of my environment), and certainly don't annoy those around you by
wandering, disturbing them, etc.  Just my $0.02.

ISTR that they don't allow them in the BAA Boston Marathon.

I remember reading about the history of the boston marathon, that their
was a Moroccan(?) who wore a Sony Walkman in the late seventies early
eighties at the Boston Marathon.  I can't remember his name though.

I do remember reading that some of the other runners joked he was put up
to the task by Sony to promote the new fangled contraption.  He ran out
front for a few miles, before finally tiring and dropping off the lead
pack.

Personally, I hate running with one.  But to each his own!
