The race was going too slow for him and he wasn't afraid to push it even
though he was competing against some of the best in the country.

That's one hell of an accomplishment.  And one hell of a time too!  (I
don't think I'd be too disappointed in it...)

Not that I agree, but I'm glad to hear somebody thinks a skinny runner is
hot.  It gives me hope.  ;)

Ya, but .19 of a second too slow for 2 miles.  OUCH!  That would hurt to be
that close, if that is what you were shooting for.

I doubt that's what he was really after...I think that's just what he
would've settled for if he didn't get the record...

Well said. My skinny legs don't usually bring about amorous
glances from the ladies...hehe

You can bet it's what he was after, but since it was a huge
goal, even missing it by a fraction is fantastic and he knew
it, IMO. Breaking Pre's record is one HELL of a consolation
prize! ;-)

yeah, no kidding.  I'd be happy breaking 20, not to mention outrunning
the legendary Steve Prefontaine...

This is going to have to be my last comment along these lines, (don't want to
get myself all carried away.)  Maybe you just haven't met women who 'know' what
benefits there are to skinny legs:-)
Jennifer
p.s. so, all that testosterone that builds up bulky muscles has to find another
outlet, no?  Hmmm, whewie!
p.s.s. Don't mind me.

To steal a line from the PGA, "These guys are good."

High-schooler runs record 800 split at Penn Relays
April 28, 2001 6:25 pm EST

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Alan Webb of South Lakes High School in Reston, Va., ran
the fastest high school 800-meter split in the history of Penn Relays on
Saturday.

Webb anchored the 3,200-meter relay in 1 minute, 49.1 seconds. The previous
record was 1:49.4, set in 1970 by Bob Wheeler of Dulaney High School in
Timonium, Md.

"I wanted to win, that was the main concern," said Webb, who was the first
high schooler to break a 4-minute mile since 1967.

"You can't beat running in front of 50,000 people screaming your name."

Webb was handed the baton in first place by about two meters, then extended
the lead to more than 50 meters by the end of his first 400.

It was a personal best for Webb, who also anchored Friday's record-setting
boys' high school distance medley. South Lakes broke the Penn Relays record
with a time of 9:59.66.

Webb, a senior, is planning to start at Michigan in the fall.
