Tight calf after workouts

Tight calf after workouts

Post by Dustin Baxt » Fri, 10 Jun 1994 12:35:56

I started working out about a month ago.  I run about 3-5 miles each
morning and in the evening I either swim, bike, or run again.  My
problem is that my left calf is always very tight for the first mile
or so of my morning run and then loosens up for the rest of my run.
Then about an hour or so after my run, it gets very tight again.  I
stretch out before and after my run (sometimes I even have to stop
during my run to stretch it).  I have also been applying Icy Hot to my
calf before each workout, but my claf still remains very tight during
the first part of the run.  I ran both cross-country and track in
high school and I am doing the same stretching routine.  Does anyone
have any suggestions for me?
Thanks in advance!

One possibility is something which happened to me while training for a
triathlon several years ago. During the late stages of a 1500m swim, my
calf cramped up like a night-time charlie horse. I was swimming 1000m a
day in a 25 meter pool. That means a whole lot of kicking off the wall and
if you kick off with the same leg every time you're going to wear it out.
Either find a 50 meter pool to swim in or develope a kick off technique
which alternates the leg with which you push off from the wall.
