That's an absolutely tremendous accomplishment. Congratulations.

Way to go John!  See?  We knew you could do it.  And under 30 min to boot!
Now you have a PR to gun for.  From your report, it didn't sound like you
went out too fast.  I always race faster than I ever train.
So congrats and keep on training and racing!  I expect to hear more about
your exploits.

Not too bad, indeed! I think that's quite impressive considering that it
took me four months from when I started running to enter my first 5K, and
I clocked over 33 minutes. Way to go!

Congratulations and thanks for the report!

You captured the uneasiness that first-timers feel about racing - and hopefully
showed why it's unfounded. There are no race police waiting to pull you out of
the race.  Everyone belongs.

As you do more local races, it'll just get better. You'll start to recognize
folks around you <at your level> and you'll start to support each other and
develop friendly rivalries to push to PR's. And laugh about it at the end and
swear you'll get 'em next time.

That's what I mean when I speak of the camaraderie of racing.

<snip race report>

See?  You _did_ make it in under 30 minutes.  Way to go!  Congratulations, but
now be careful -- I started the same way you did last year, and I got bit by the
racing bug.

John Lively
