beginner's question

Post by Yin Huang G » Wed, 16 Mar 1994 03:25:00

Forgive me if this is a FAQ,
I am currently trying to run for fitness and perhaps for marathon,
much later :-). I am wondering what would be the best/fastest way to
improve the performance. Right now, I can only run to a maximum of 3
miles in 25 minutes, with no rest. After rest (walking, 3-4 minutes) I
can only go for at most another mile. I'll appreciate any help on
this. Thank you.

The best way?  I (master of the come-back) have found that, whether
beginning a running program or comming back to running, a very slow
and progressive program is both best and fastest.  The key is to enjoy
running where you are.  After years of trying to get back to where I
was I finaly realized that I rather be running than not running, and
I'd rather be happy where I am than injured.

Some things you may find helpful are: stay flexable; vary workouts;
run with a group once a week; take a day off; have an alternate
activity (swim, bike, weights); increase any training gradually and be
patient.
