5k question...

Was wondering what a is a good time to run 5k in. I have never entered a
race, but constantly race the clock. I really dont know where I stand
amongst enthusiasts.
So what might be (average) time for a beginner, mediocre, and elite
runner?

For a smaller local race (males) . . .

- beginner:                 26-29 minutes
-" mediocre"              22-25 minutes
- avg. age grouper:  18-21 minutes
- top 10%:                   low/mid 16s - high 17s
- winner of race:        sub-16

I suppose this will vary according to region, but is what I've seen over the
years in smaller (~150 runners) local races.

There have been some spotty 14s here and there, but those are usually as part
of our state's "grand prix" points races. Otherwise, I think the above is a
pretty fair gauge.
