foot / heel pain

Post by RayRo » Thu, 30 Mar 1995 11:19:25

I started running about six months ago and have been running more than I
ever have in my life.  I run 2 - 3 miles about every other day.  I would
like to eventually increase my mileage.
My problem started about 2 -3 weeks ago.  The bottom of my left foot
started hurting.  It feels sort of like a big bruise (inside though) on
the inside back of the arch and the front of my heel.  If I'm not
imagining things it seems that the arch doesn't hurt anymore but the heel
does.  It doesn't hurt at all while running but when I press on it it
hurts and when I walk barefoot or in socks around the house it hurts.
I'm not sure if I should keep running on it or if I should take some time
off?  I hate to take time off for fear that I won't start running again.
I also wonder if wearing double socks or some kind of padding in my shoe
would help.
Any suggestions?

Ray,

It's funny, I had the exact same thing several months ago.  However,
it's gone away since then.  I'll look up (in my logs) what I did but I think
that I put in some heel lifts (cut out cardboard).  I also slowed my running
down, took asprin, iced it and got plenty of rest.  I'll get back to you.

My research into the same problem indicates a condition called Plantar
Fasciitis.  There are a number of posts her about it. I've been using ice
and rest.  No results so far.

I've got it too, but it sounds like your condition has progressed to a
heel spur. Go to a good doctor now, before you need an operation! This is
not something to mess with.

I had the same problem when I lengthened my stride. I dropped back to
the original stride length and it went away.
