Hello,

The USCAA (US Corporate Athletics Assocation) will be holding
their 1996 "Corporate Nationals" track meet here in San Diego
(UCSD) next summer.  Lou Putnam, the current president of the
USCAA I believe, will be in San Diego December 14 to hold
an informational meeting for those interested in competing
and/or volunteering.  Currently he is scheduling a meeting
in Rancho Bernardo (near AT&T and Hewlett Packard), but if
there is enough interest he will address groups in other
areas (Sorrento Valley, downtown) as well.

If you would be interested in attending such a meeting,

whether you'd rather have the meeting during or after work.
Lou is thinking about scheduling the Rancho Bernardo meeting
for 4 or 5 pm to avoid traffic.

He also means to include military groups in the competition.
I'll post more information as I get it.

What exactly is a "corporate runner"?

Does anyone who works for a corporation automatically become a corporate
runner?

signed

a possible entrant

Hi,

I believe people from a given corporation form a variety of teams for
this event.  For example, a company could enter a team in the
"submasters distance relay" event.  This is made up of a submasters
woman running a 200m, and three  submasters runners doing an 800m,
1200m, and 1600m respectively.  There are regional and national
competitions.  I haven't participated in one yet, but others in
my company have.

There look to be about 20 different events, both track and field.
There are also divisions based on company-size.  A small company
could enter just one event with a two-person team.  I think this
is all team oriented, with no individual events, e.g. one person
just couldn't show up and run a 10k.

If you're real interested, I sent for something called the
Corporate Running Sourcebook from the USCAA.  Marcy Callison
at (515) 964-6798 or (515) 964-6704 (FAX) is the contact there.
You could also come take a look at the info I have, if you wish
as it looks like you and I are on the same campus.

Well, yes and no. Everyone working for a given company is elligible to join
their company team including full-time contract employees and retirees
(the rules are rather complex, send me email for more detail). BUT, you
can't enter as an individual. The entries are the company TEAMS some of
which exceed 100 members.

I have been participating (most years) since 1982, so maybe I can help.

There are 24 scoring events including 5k and 10k road races, track relays
and field events. There are NO individual events. All events are TEAM
oriented, i.e. the men's mile has two runners per team and their mile times
are added for the team score. The road races are scored by place of finish
within age group, male and females run seperate races.

Not every team will enter all 24 events. The requirements differ by division
depending on the size of the company, so Podunk Industries of Peoria doesn't
have to go up against mega-giant GE (winner the past 2 years) or EXXON or
AT&T. Rules may also be a bit less stringent and there may be fewer events
in regionals than the national championship.
