achilles tendonitus & tight calves

I have had problems off and on with both my knee, calf and stiffness in my
tendon on my left leg since I began training for triathlons (and now the
Philadelphia marathon on November 21) in January. I have received several
acupuncture treatments to my left calf and have started to take cell guard and
glusocamine chondroitin which have helped my knee in particular. The other day
when I was running four miles, however, I began to get shooting pains radiating
from my ankle. I stopped and it was okay. I then drove 3 hours to a conference
and after I sat for about an hour I got up and had aching pain in my left leg
which worsened whenever I bent my ankle. It hurt all day, but was fine the next
day when I got up.I ran again on Sunday, this time 5 miles, and I didn't have
any pain during the run, but about an hour after I encountered the same pain.
Diminished later by ibuprofen and using an ankle support.
How long should I cease running---and how can I further speed my recovery (I
have read Ozzie's postings to the other person with calf pain, but haven't
tried that technique yet)---and can I still train and be ready for the marathon
in November, if I take some time off?
Please write directly to my e-mail address as I don't get to this newsgroup as
often as I'd like. Thanks!

Sitting shortens your calf, because it's at right angles to the upper leg.
Thus, when you get up, you're tearing it and the tendon because suddenly they
must stretch. Also, an injured muscle crunches up while at rest.

An amateur's opinion...
