5K race question

5K race question

Post by k.. » Tue, 28 Aug 2001 10:04:55

Hi, wondering when the latest is that I can run a strong interval or
other hard type of run where it won't affect an upcoming 5K.
Specifically, I have a 5K this coming Friday and am thinking of doing
a hard run Monday night.  Should that be a problem or is there enough
time for recovery?

Thanks,

Ken

I would say that's plenty of time, even if it was a very hard effort.  Then
again, this sort of question does seem to invite the disclaimer 'your
mileage may vary', since no-one really knows exactly how quickly another
person recovers etc.

best of luck,

It depends <smile>.  For me, it would adversely affect my 5k.  I prefer,
for the entire week before, to keep the intensity the same but cut down
on the total distance.  I don't know what a "hard run" means in this
case, but for the week before the race, I would eliminate any tempo work
entirely, and I would probably do something like 2/3 of my usual track
session early in the week and then perhaps 1/3 of it a couple of days
before the race.  If you feel fast but antsy you know you're tapering
correctly.  I also take my last long run two weeks before the race, and
it's on the short side at last.  My last real long run is usually three
weeks before the race.

Some people, who run a much higher weekly mileage total than me, can do
a 5k with essentially no taper, but that's because 5k is such a small
percentage of their weekly total distance.

Age matters in this, too.  The older you get, the more slowly you
recover, and I'm much more careful about recovery now than I was 20
years ago.

It's different for everyone. I would probably do a hard run
on Monday AND Wednesday.... whereas that would be a
disaster for someone else.

You have to experiment to see what is best for you. As another
example of how different we all are, Bill Rogers used to do
a fairly hard 20 miler5 days befroe Boston. Ouch!

Thanks, it's interesting how much it varies based on each person.  I
think I'll do an interval run tonight, see how I do on Friday, and
base my next race on that.
