Can you train successfully for a marathon with a case of  ITB pain at the knee?
Or would you give it up?

Give it up in my non-medical opinion.  Get healthy first.

DAFLETCHR,

I did a training run today and my IT band has been causing problems lately.
I thought I was doing OK until a water break the OUCH.

I remember how it destroyed my first 1/2 marathon about a year ago and I'm
seriously thinking of being a walker at my first Marathon because of
problems with my IT band.

The short of it is, if it is bad now, it'll only get worse in the long run.

I agree you have to get healthy first, not just because it's the prudent thing
to do, but ITband is a *** to get over if you keep aggravating it.
Hopefully, you can take two weeks, get on anti-inflammatories, ice it
constantly, and come back slowly after a couple weeks.  I've stayed on my feet
with ITband, and broke down in the marathon--not a fun thing to do.  Good luck,
steve

I'm doing it right now;  but my case is not very severe.  I get the pain
starting at about 12-13 miles.  At that point I put on a Fabrifoam knee
strap and the pain soon is gone.  Finished a 20 miler w/o any problems.
