Can anyone tell me if there are any marathons in San Francisco
or the region, and how I can sign up. I will be in the region
between September 1992 and June 1993.

At least once a weekend, someone, usually Dave Horning, puts on a trail marathon. And, once or twice a month, someone puts on a small, low-key road marathon. These lower key marathons usually take place in some of the more scenic areas around the bay such as Point Reyes, Mt. Diablo, or Golden Gate Rec. Area (not to be confused with GG Park).
And that's just the marathons. If you have a mind to run farther, ultramarathons abound in the bay area. Within a hour or less driving distance, 2 or 3 ultras occur every month with distances ranging from 50K to 100 Miles and times from 6 hours to 6 days (Gibson Ranch, January or February).
Runner's World lists the major marathons including the 4 cited above. They also list some of the smaller ones as well. The best thing to do though once you get to town is to get a copy of City Sports and The Calendar. Both have detailed calendars of running, biking, multi-sport, etc. events. They are published monthly, are free, and are available at most sports stores, health clubs, gyms, etc. There are a couple of other free publications but the names escape me right now.
Hope this helps
