Shoe Advice for a heavy runner?

Post by Ed Sexto » Thu, 04 Apr 2002 05:27:58

Hello-

I am replacing my old running/cross trainer shoes, and wanted to get a few
opinions about shoes good for heavier-build runners.  I tend to like the
New Balance and Saucony shoes, but I have not done my homework regarding
these lines.

Withg my current shoe, I am experiencing slight discomfort in the muscles
around the sides of the knees and mild shin splint pain.

I'm 30 and have been running off and on since high school. I'm 6'0" tall
and weigh 215lbs, partly due to a heavy frame.

Despite my build, I really enjoy long distance running.  On average my
runs are between 5-7 miles, and I plan on increasing this.

Thanks for any shoe advice you may be able to provide!

Sincerely-

Ed Sexton

215 pounds?!  I'd recommend horseshoes.

One thing I'll advise is that don't automatically get pushed into a motion
control shoes just because of your size and weight.  Also try several
stability shoes that fit your foot type.  I'm 6'3" 240lbs and was originally
put into the Nike Air Durhams because of my size.  After a while they felt
like 2x4's on my feet.  I've now settled on Brooks Adrenaline GTS which are
marketed as a shoe for small to mid frame runners but the shoes feels great
and I'm on my third pair.  The only drawback is that they are shot by 250
miles.

Good luck,
Tom

Be a generic *** if you please but don't make fun of people
asking legit questions. As far as we know you area a 650 pound
smelly dork. You at least sound like one.

Shoe Advice for a heavy runner?

Hi, Ed,

You've already gotten some great advice from others. You and are are about
the same size (6' and ~205-210#) although I have a little more "life
experience" (but not as much as *some* in this group <G>). I, too, was
steered toward motion control until I specifically asked why since my gait is
pretty neutral. They put me in Asics Nimbus (which work OK) and New Balance
878/879s (which I like a lot). The deal is that I don't tend to get the
mileage out of my shoes that other slimmer folks get. The Asics seem to last
a bit longer than the NBs. The Asics don't show wear at all (I learned the
hard way about when a shoe is toast) so you have to be careful about using
outer sole wear as an indicator. ~200 miles is about it for my shoes. I can
get a little more out of them if I use them for short runs or trails but it
still makes me nervous.

Another suggestion is to get a pair, break them in, use them for a while and
then get another pair (same or different brand) so that you can compare the
difference in feel between newer shoes and older shoes. Or, if you can swing
it, it's nice to be able to alternate shoes to let each pair dry out before
the next run so maybe buy two pairs and then after a while buy another.

Good luck and please let us know how it goes,
Layne

I am too overweight for my age by around 10 to 15 lbs and I use NB 991GL
(http://www.nbwebexpress.com/detail.asp?style=M991GL) . I bought it two
months back and am pretty happy about it. I do use those for long runs too
(~ 6 to 8 miles). Sometimes I rotate those with my other pair which is
Brooks Trance NXT. These shoes are great too. I love these shoes too.

I am slightly heavier than you but I think the best advice is the one
you have already received from Layne: Motion control shoes are not
necessarily the best choice for heavy runners. But if you need an MC
shoe anyway consider the ASCIS GEL MC Plus or even the ASICS Gel
Foundation III. Personally I have used both and the BROOKS BEAST.

Shoe Advice for a heavy runner?

I second this opinion. I am a big fan of the Saucony Grid Hurricane,
but this may not be the best for you. Get fitted at a running store.

I think the most frustrating part about being a heavy person is that I
wear out my shoes very quickly. I don't think I have ever gotten more
than 4 months out of them. It took me a long time to find the perfect
shoe for me, and I think I had better get 6 pairs before they change
them!

If you can try the shoes on a treadmill this would be a bonus...

Shoe Advice for a heavy runner?

Hey Ed,
Pay attention to what several of these guys had to say.
I am bigger than average runner as well...someone
talked me into a pair of those "big boy" shoes once
and I thought I would croak.

I have a very high arch and find that the Saucony Grid Web
works well for me.  I may have to replace them a little more
often than a lighter runner...but they fit well..feel great.

Personally, I think paying more attention to your foot type
and running style is more important than "heavy runner shoes".
Just prepare to replace them after 250-350 miles as opposed to
getting 500 miles out of them.

Good Luck,
Leo

Loved the Grid Hurricane...until I tried on my first pair
of Grid Web late last year....
Try a pair on Jenn, they are even better (for me) than
the Hurricane.

Shoe Advice for a heavy runner?

I am 6'1 225lbs. If you like Saucony, and don't need motion control,  I
recommend the Grid Web.

Yes...I'm 6'4" and was 230 when I started (down to 200 now) and they tried
to get me into the Brooks Beast. Just didn't feel right. I wear the Brooks
Adrenaline IV and swear by them (and occasionally AT them, but that's my
fault, not the shoes'). I've also noticed that I have to buy new ones more
often that a lot of people in this group seem to.

Just try a LOT of different shoes on. If the store that you're buying them
at is worth a crap, they'll let you try on as many as you need to find the
ones that fit best. My store (Runner's Den in Phoenix) MADE me try on more
than five pairs, and also made me go outside and run around the block in
them before making a decision...

David

THE kayano is a stbility shoe ,,, if  you have a medium arch then it
would tend to fit you ,,, if you have a low arch or flat feet i would
wear a motion control shoe , I you have a hi-arch a cushion shoe would
best fit your needs=))
